After oral surgery, tooth extraction, tooth impaction or gum grafting it will be tough for you to eat food you usually have, After the surgery, your dentist will require you to eat soft and easy to eat food, this is important because this may contribute to the healing of the surgical area and get back to your normal daily routine fast.

You know you will be having a dental surgery procedure in a few days and you are aware that you will need to stock on food and stuff you will need for the next few days. The first few days will be difficult especially with surgeries such as removal of an impacted tooth, or gum grafting so you might want to stock up on the following.

· Food

On the first couple of days after the surgery liquid and soft diet is recommended, you may have Yogurt, soup, mashed potatoes, Ice cream, Fruit smoothies, and the like, on the third day you can have food that does not need too much chewing like eggs, bread, sandwiches, and pasta. In the coming days patients gradually introduce some food that can be difficult to chew after the 6th or 7th day since the area is likely to be fully healed. They can go back to eat their normal meals like rice, crunchy and spicy food, pizza, burgers, and others.

· Medicines

Medications are important after any kind of surgical procedure, your dentist will prescribe medications for a week, this will be pain relievers and antibiotics, pain relievers may be a combination of acetaminophen and ibuprofen for effective pain relief. Your medications should be taken according to the prescription. Inform your dentist of any allergies you may have. If you need a stronger pain reliever inform your dentist.

· Tissues

You may be needing it. You will drool after surgery because your mouth may still be numb, you may also have problems swallowing fluids, some of it may not go straight to your mouth due to the numbness. This is for the first few hours after surgery while the anesthetics are still in effect.

· Gauze

A simple extraction may need gauze during the first few hours after surgery but in some cases may take longer. It is always better to have extra gauze on hand after the surgery, so you can always replace the used one with a fresh clean gauze for your comfort and keeping the area clean.

· Ice or Ice packs

In most major dental surgeries bruising and swelling occur after surgery, this may occur for a few days and ice can help you get rid of the swelling on your face.

· Your dentist’s phone number

It is always important to have your dentist’s phone number, there may be complications during the healing of the wound, you can easily get in touch with your dentists.

· Water

You must be hydrated while your wound is healing to replace the fluid lost from bleeding and may help you heal faster. But you should not use a straw to drink your water, sucking water may induce bleeding of the wound.
